PRR Class X60 -86' steel boxcar

General information:

The general Class is X-60 aubclasses X60, X60A-X60K. I believe that theAthearn model is based on a Greenville prototype (smooth sills) earliestversion being class X-60B and X60C(?) delivered in late 1964. The earliest ofthe classe were PS-built X-60, X-60A distinguished by the exposed ribsshowing on the sill, that were first delivered in late 1964 early 1965(according to a 1966 RMC).
Earliest versions (built in 1964 and early '65) were dilivered with roofwalksthat were removed very soon thereafter when the safety device standards wererevised. This would a neat detail if you were modeling 1965 but nietherAthearn nor Gloorcraft ship a roofwalk with the kit.
Thrall also built X60s but the "PRR Color Guides": don't discuss them. Vol. 1has a shot of an X60H which has a different sill than either the PS orGreenville version so I surmise this may be a Thrall.
X60A (PS) was an eight-door box assigned for service to GM plants. Forgetwhat you might have read about Conrail taking most of the eight-door cars outof service. I've been studying these cars outside Chevrolet's Moraine TruckAssembly plant in Dayton and there's plenty of eight-door cars wearing avariety of herald although Conrail predominates (the plant is on a ConrailLine) --Tom Vondruska
