A pioneer American train drawn by the famous "JohnBull" locomotive, imported from England in July1831. The "John Bull" train made its first trip inthe neighborhood of Bordentown, N. J., November 12,1831, on the Camden and Amboy Railroad, now a partof the Pennsylvania Railroad System. The Pennsylvania Railroad funeral train carryingAbraham Lincoln's body, as it stopped just west of theSchuylkill River in Philadelphia while enroute fromWashington to the Quaker City, April 22, 1865. Thelocomotive and cars in this train reveal a markedimprovement in construction over the early pioneer equip.ment of the "John Bull" train. Another train of the middle nineteenth century, thefirst through express to operate between New Yorkand Washington. This train made its first trip onNovember 23, 1863. The railroad lines it traversed allnow form a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad System. |
