| The city is the seat of Western
Reserve University (founded at Hudson in 1826 and moved here in 1882).
Case Institute of Technology (1877), John Corroll University (1886), Fenn
College, St. John College and Ursuline College for Women. Except for the
Lake front, the city is practically surrounded by a vast system of public
parks totaling approximately 14,000 acres. A motor trip around the metropolitan
area by park routes would cover almost 100 miles.
The history of Cleveland is replete
with the deeds of
men whose names have become legend: John D. Rockefeller; Marcus A. Hanna;
William A. Otis; Jephtha H. Wade; Charles F. Brush; Samuel L. Mathers;
Stephen V. Harkness; Worcester R. Warner; Ambrose Swasey; Thomas
L. Johnson; Mark Hanna; Newton D. Baker; Cyrus W. Eaton; Tom 1. Girdler;
the Van Sweringen brothers, Oris P. and Mantis J.- all have contributed
their particular talents to the growth of the city. |
