COLUMBIANA, Ohio

Population 3,369. First called Dixonville, for its founder, when laid out in 1805. The Pittsburgh-Wooster Stagecoach line passed through here during the early nineteenth century. Its early industries were the manufacturing of agricultural machinery and carriages. Today it has a number of varied industries-foundries, machine shops, and furniture plants, the larger ones being Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Co., Columbiana Boiler Co., and National Rubber Machinery Co. Harvey S. Firestone was born here in 1868.

For the 12-month period ending August 31, 1957, the freight gross revenue from the Columbiana-Leetonia agency amounted to $1,784,842.

SALEM, Ohio

Population 12,754. Known as the "Quaker City" because of its settlement by Quakers from Salem, N. J., in 1801 and later joined by groups from Pennsylvania and Virginia. It is located in one of the most productive dairy and fruit sections of Ohio. Prior to the Civil War, Salem was headquarters for the Anti-Slavery Society in this area and an important station on the "underground railroad. " Its manufactures include china, lumber, furnaces, machinery, metal products, flour, and dairy products. Located here are plants of the Eller Co., Youngstown Kitchens Division of American Radiator & Standard Sanitary Co. Freight gross revenue from this station totaled $1,330,992 for the 12-month period ending August 31, 1957. Passenger gross revenue for the same period was $89,704.

ALLlANCE, Ohio

Population 26,161. From this agency came $3,545,923 in freight gross revenue and $135,044 in passenger gross for the twelve-month period ending August 31, 1957.

A railroad and manufacturing center located on the Mahoning River, incorporated in 1889. Leading industries include the Morgan Engineering Co., American Steel Foundries, Alliance Machine Co., Babcock Wilcox CO., Davidson Chemical Co., Transue-Williams Steel Forging Co., and Alliance Brick Co. It is the seat of Mount Union College founded in 1846 and attended by Presidents Garfield and McKinley.

RAVENNA, Ohio

Population 9,857. Situated on the watershed between the Cuyahoga and Mahoning Rivers and was settled in 1799 by Benjamin Tappan, Jr., a native of New England and later a U. S. Senator from Ohio.
